Personal:
· Born and raised in Vancouver
· Graduated with honours from Prince of Wales Secondary in 2003
· Currently majoring in political science at the University of British Columbia
· Linebacker on the UBC football t eam
· Innovative, experienced leader with strong ties to the community
· Active member of St. John’s (Shaughnessy) Anglican Church
Active participant in the UBC T-Birds in schools inner-city program

Platform:
· Altruistic in views and ideas
· Major proponent of commerce and the growth of small business
· Rezoning of areas to meet the growing demands for housing and commerce
· Property tax reform
· Mayoral support and push for timely and cost-effective completion of Olympic infrastructure
· Decreased parking costs---especially downtown
· Increase sense of community and citizenship in the city
· Increased funding for community centers---a source of education, life skills, and positive relationships
· Encourage community and cultural diversity through implementation of more festivals and community events--- eg. week long “Greek Days”
· Advocate for Seniors’ issues
· No mandatory retirement age
· Married couples NOT forced to split up when searching for retirement home
· Funding for Seniors’ Centres
· Significant increase in water fountains in the city--- Mayoral Water Fountain Memorial project
· Make our citizens feel safe and clean up the streets
· Decrease drug use, poverty, and crime through implementation of Four Pillars Program
· Increased police force; increased police presence in problem areas
· Significant police presence and crowd control at the fireworks
· Re-opening of mental health facilites--- helping keep vulnerable people off the streets
· Mayoral mentorship/youth council program
· Importance placed on drug education/awareness in schools
· Broader education perspective through increase in field trips
· Upass extension to all secondary and post-secondary institutions with ability to opt-out
· Fight drinking and driving by providing buses out of downtown 24/7
· Give parents with children access to handicapped parking spots
· Free course for women on understanding sports taught by the Mayor himself !

Austin Spencer and Vancouver’s Interest Party – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

There has been a lot of bitterness and disillusionment surrounding civic politics in Vancouver since the infighting within both COPE/Vision Vancouver and NPA camps and technician Darcy Farmsworth has had enough. “For too many years candidates of both of the two major civic parties have grown complacent.” Farmsworth feels that change is necessary and that Austin Spencer’s decision to run as a candidate for mayor is a breathe of fresh air. “I feel that his pro-community and entrepreneurial platform provide a positive alternative that Vancouverites should take into account before casting their ballots”, mused Farmsworth.

Spencer is a Political Science major at the University of British Columbia who has been campaign heavily since announcing that he was throwing in his hat into the election race. “I feel that Vancouver needs a choice on the ballot that will represent their needs as well as their dreams of how they envision Vancouver should be before the 2010 Olympics take place. Previously, there wasn’t” quipped Spencer. Spencer feels that encouragement of growth of small business and rezoning areas to meet the demand of housing and commerce is essential. “Vancouver currently does not have the blueprint required to successfully hold the 2010 Olympics. “Housing and commercial spaces are going to be in ill supply unless action is taken to allow development to take place” states Spencer in his party platform. Spencer also believes that a larger police force, city beautification and reforms to old homes policies are required. “I want to ensure that an elderly couple is never forced to split up because a retirement home refuses to host both of them. I will make housing both spouses a requirement for all homecare facilities”, Spencer announced on his website austinforvancouver.blogspot.com.

When asked if he thinks a university student has a chance of making a surprise victory and winning the November 19^th election’s most coveted position, Spencer quips that, “people might underestimate me but I have a clear plan to build on the what makes this one of the best city’s in the world, and that’s what really matters when casting your ballot.” Austin Spencer’s campaign news and platform can be found at austinforvancouver.blogspot.com
